“Christine,” Starring Rebecca Hall: The Film I Should Have Written

On the occasion of the poster release for new film Christine, allow me to tell you a brief story about why doing means so much more than just talking.

Some years ago, I happened upon my college’s Wikipedia page. As I scanned over the “Notable Alumni” section, one name stood out to me—one that I didn’t recognize: Christine Chubbuck. I clicked on her name and found myself reading this story of a troubled woman whose tragic actions shook the world of live television. I happened to think about her again just last year when a psychotic man gunned down a reporter and her cameraman during a live feed in Roanoke, Virginia.

Noah: A Man and His Boat

Straight from the fucked-up mind who brought us Pi (1998), Requiem for a Dream (2000), and Black Swan (2010), comes the epic Biblical story (which Biblical stories aren’t epic?) of Noah and his famous ark. Auteur Darren Aronofsky and his mustache take us back to the days when a storm could flood the earth with such apocalyptic might that only a monstrous boat could save a man and his family.

Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly reunite after 2001’s A Beautiful Mind, and along with Emma Watson, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, and rising star Logan Lerman, their characters will try to defy the impossible in Noah, which is due to surge into theatres this March 28.

August: Osage County (Hey, that’s the month we’re in!)

Next to Gravity, August: Osage County is my most anticipated fall release. Without knowing much else about the movie, here are enough reasons to jump on board my bandwagon:

1. Tracy Letts wrote the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning Best Play, as well as the film’s screenplay. Not only is Letts a terrific actor (I was privileged to see him give his Tony-winning performance in last year’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), but he’s a fantastic writer (last year’s Killer Joe was one of my favorite films and was deserving of Oscar recognition, but was wrongfully ignored).

AMPAS recently released this year’s official Oscar poster, and I must say, it’s pretty awesome! Each of the 84 Best Picture winners is represented as an Oscar statuette. Check out the poster below, and click here to see each statue design up close.

The 85th annual Academy Awards airs Sunday, February 24 at 7pm EST on ABC.

New Clip, Poster for FRANCES HA

Check out this clip and new poster for Noah Baumbach’s latest offering, Frances Ha, starring and co-written by Greta Gerwig. The movie made my top 20 list for 2012 (#16). The film is slated for a limited release beginning May 17.

New Poster Released for LINCOLN

Is there any side profile more famous than Lincoln’s? The penny has nothing on this newly released poster for Steven Spielberg’s new release starring Daniel Day-Lewis. The actor seems ready to snatch his third Oscar for this one. The formula is there: fall release, true story, a historic and tragic figure, period piece, directed by Steven Spielberg.

The film also stars an amazing cast of veterans, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, David Strathairn, James Spader, Jackie Earle Haley, John Hawkes, Walton Goggins, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln.

Lincoln opens November 16.

Preview: The Paperboy

I’m not really sure what to make of Lee Daniels’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning Precious (2009), but this vintage-looking poster for The Paperboy is pretty sweet. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, John Cusack, Nicole Kidman, and David Oyelowo. It screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and opens this December by Millennium Entertainment. HICK Poster Debuts

And speaking of Chloë Grace Moretz (see the Carrie post below), the official poster for her upcoming release Hick debuts today. (There isn’t a single actor in this movie that I don’t love!) Check it out below, followed by information on the new film.

Official Synopsis:

Small-town teenager Luli (Chloë Grace Moretz ) escapes to Las Vegas, leaving behind her alcoholic and abusive parents. Armed with her smarts, a pistol and pocket money, she hitchhikes her way west. Along the way, Luli crosses paths with Eddie (Eddie Redmayne), an unstable rebel with questionable motives, and Glenda (Blake Lively), a cocaine-snorting drifter on the run. Adapted from the critically acclaimed novel by Andrea Portes, this powerful story pulls you into a provocative world of drugs, seduction and murder.

The Derick Martini-directed film opens theatrically and on VOD on May 11.

2012: The Year of the “Best Picture”

After completing the eight-year odyssey that was my 170 list, I’ve turned my sights to a new list: the Oscar Best Picture winners. To date, I’ve seen 65 of the 83 winners (and I’ve seen all Best Picture nominees since 1998).

As the 84th Academy Award nominations are to be announced later today (8:30am EST/5:30am PST), I’m turning my focus to these immortalized films and I’m giving myself until the 2013 Oscars to complete the list. That said, I’m declaring 2012 “The Year of the ‘Best Picture’.”
